CLASS 2 Lecture Summary

So we found out that every story we tell. has a start a middle and a finish.

• Exposition (Once upon a time there was a pretty girl named Cinderella who lived with her stepmother and stepsisters. They get invited to a ball at the palace...)
• Conflict (...Wicked Stepmother and Step Sister prevent Cinderella from going to the ball, fairy godmother helps her out...)
• Climax (...Midnight comes and the spell wears off...)
• Resolve (...The prince finds Cinderella and puts on the glass slipper... )
• Return to the new situation (...and they lived happily ever after.)

That is the anatomy of a plot. The plot is how the storyteller manipulates the emotion. The best way to have your audience connect with your story is through the characters in the story. If you communicate how your characters in your story feels and how they change, within an environment that you establish and describe, you will connect with an audience.

The Rise of Action to a Climax and the Fall of Action to the new status quo, is called a story arc.

A short story usually only has one arc. A novel has a few but is encompassed by bigger story arc and serial stories may have one arc per installment or multiple arcs under a bigger story arc. Newspaper stories start with the climax first and then the details afterward, so that when the reader stops reading, he already got the main point of the story.

Whether we use pictures, words, audio or video, we can provoke emotions through any medium and in the process get our message across.

Assignment 2: Morphing
Please create a sequence of 6 images using powerpoint and using a cross dissolve transition to show changes of an subject from one state to another. I will be grading for:
How gradual the sequence of transition is (2)
Creativity in Content Gathering (2)
Adherence to the Deadline (1)

Assignment is due on Friday midnight.

Grading of Assignment 1
I graded the assignment as submitted on Friday by most of you, but because of the issue of communication between yourselves I decided it would not be fair to some of you to leave the grades as is, so I will grade the submissions for our assignment in Class as Assignment 1B and average 1A and 1B for your final grade just to be fair to those that did do the first assignment properly. This will not happen again, so please read my blog posts. I will email your grades for this assignement by Friday.
